Friends Mourn the Passing of Board Member Anna Dewald on August 11, 2017

Anna Dewald Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of long time Friends Board Member Anna Dewald on August 11, 2017. Anna was born in Quinlan, Texas on November 22, 1926 to Annie Lois Smalley Kent and Bartis William Kent. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and her Masters and Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Houston. She served as Dean of the College of Education at the University of St. Thomas in Houston for over 27 years. At her retirement she received the title of Dean Emeritus. Anna was an active member of Seabrook United Methodist Church and she served on the Board of the Evelyn Meador Library in Seabrook. Anna was a proud member of Lakewood Yacht Club, the Women Who Wine charitable organization, and the Ladies Association at Lakewood, of which she was a past president. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Dr. Anna K. Dewald Scholarship Fund sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi honor society in education at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

We were blessed to celebrate her 90th Birthday with many Board members on May 22, 2017. It was a wonderful opportunity to honor her. She will truly be missed.

Rotary Club of Seabrook Generously Supports the Evelyn Meador Summer Reading Program

The Rotary Club of Seabrook was organized in October 1991.  The charter ceremony was held at Lakewood Yacht Club on January 31, 1992. The Rotary International motto is “Service Above Self”. The focus of the Seabrook Rotary Club is to “promote prosperity through education and initiatives that engender self-sufficiency.” Meetings are held every Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas.

For almost two decades, the Seabrook Rotary has made a generous grant annually to the Friends of Meador Library to help underwrite their summer reading program. Elton Porter, a founding member of the Friends of Evelyn Meador Library and a proud Rotarian approached the club and asked them if he could start an initiative to benefit kids at the library during the summer. Thus, “the white hat” was born.

Each Thursday morning, a white hat is passed at the breakfast meeting and members are asked to show their support for the library by donating a dollar or more each week. The total raised by “the white hat” is then given to the Friends to pay for programs and activities at the library for youth during the summer months. Last year’s grant was $2500.

Over the years, the Seabrook community has greatly benefited from these programs which promote literacy and providing learning opportunities and fun for people of all ages. Here are a few photos showing program events over the years. Thank you Rotarians for making it possible for the Evelyn Meador library to offer so many amazing summer programs!

Community volunteer efforts are truly appreciated and are a great example of contributing to the long-term success of the communities that Dow Chemical operates in. This donation will be used to purchase furnishings, materials and equipment that enhances the overall quality of the Evelyn Meador Library, as well as contribute to community success through improved program offerings.
